Onboarding Conversion Strategy

A unified plan synthesizing growth tactics from $100K+ MRR apps, pain point research, competitive analysis, and Manifest's unique science-grounded positioning into a single, sequenced onboarding flow.

Why Onboarding Is the Entire Business

89%

60-80%

10.7%
hard paywall conversion rate
2.9x
animated paywall lift

Manifest currently has no paywall in onboarding. Every install that completes onboarding enters the app as a free user with no trial prompt, no pricing screen, and no conversion opportunity. Based on RevenueCat 2026 data, this means we are leaving the majority of potential revenue on the table at the single highest-intent moment in the user's lifecycle.

The plan below integrates three research streams: growth tactics from top-performing subscription apps (Growth Hacking Lab), real-time pain point research across Reddit/X/YouTube, and our competitive analysis of 6 direct competitors. Every addition serves both conversion and the user's experience.

Strategic Principles

These principles resolve the tension between conversion optimization and Manifest's science-grounded, anti-manipulative positioning. Every tactic below must pass all four.

Principle 1

Value Before Ask

The user must experience a genuine result (breathwork calm, emotional connection with their coach, feeling understood) before any purchase prompt. The paywall comes after the peak emotional moment, not before it.

Principle 2

Science IS the Conversion Mechanism

Where other apps use urgency, scarcity, and guilt, Manifest uses neuroscience explanations. Explaining why something works is more persuasive to our audience than pushing them to decide. The credibility builds the trust that drives conversion.

Principle 3

Address Pain Points Directly

Our research identified 10 frustrations that drive people away from manifestation tools. The onboarding should explicitly address the top 5: overcomplication (one system, not a buffet), hollow affirmations (personalized to your goals), toxic positivity (we honor all emotions), nervous system neglect (breathwork first), and skepticism (every feature cites its source).

Principle 4

Four Elements Framework

Every user silently asks: Trust (why should I believe you?), Outcome (what will I get?), Time to Result (how fast?), Social Proof (who else succeeded?). At least one element per screen, all four hit before the paywall.

The Proposed Flow (16 steps)

Current flow: 12 steps, no paywall, ~12-20 minutes. Proposed flow: 16 steps, 3-screen paywall, ~15-22 minutes. The additional steps are high-value screens (commitment signature, before/after transformation, 3-screen paywall) that directly drive conversion. Research shows length doesn't hurt conversion when every step creates emotional investment (Symmetry: 25+ steps, top performer).

Legend: Keep Existing screen, unchanged or lightly refined Revised Existing screen with meaningful changes New New screen added to the flow Removed Screen removed from current flow

Phase 1: Immediate Value (Steps 1-3)

Goal: deliver a felt result and establish trust within 90 seconds.

1
Breathwork Welcome Keep
Marco narrates 10 box-breathing cycles with animated orb and haptic feedback. User feels calmer within 60 seconds. This is the single best opening screen in the category. No competitor does this. It directly addresses pain point #6 (nervous system regulation) and delivers the Time to Result element from the Four Elements Framework.
2
Credibility Teaser Revised
Word-by-word typewriter reveal of the science positioning. Add: "Built on 6 foundational neuroscience texts" as a visual badge. This delivers the Trust element. Directly addresses pain point #8 (skepticism). Revised copy: tighten to focus on what the user will experience, not what the app does.
3
Name + Pronouns Keep
Personalization starts immediately. Name is used throughout the experience (coach messages, meditations, notifications). Keep as-is.

Phase 2: Deep Investment (Steps 4-7)

Goal: create emotional investment through the 4-step goal creation process. This is Manifest's core differentiator. Voice-first input, progressive deepening, example scaffolding. Do not shorten.

4
Goal Statement Revised
Voice-first. "What do you want to manifest?" Revised subtitle: "Describe the outcome you're working toward. Not the steps, but the destination." Clearer guidance produces better meditation scripts downstream.
5
Purpose Beyond Self Revised
Voice-first. Revised title: "Why does this matter beyond you?" Science note: "Goals connected to people you care about activate deeper motivation in the brain." Delivers Outcome element.
6
Sensory Detail Revised
Voice-first. Revised copy shifts to first-person immersion: "You're living this vision right now. What do you see around you? What sounds fill the space? What do you feel under your hands?" Invitation-oriented, not instructional.
7
Emotional Feel Revised
Voice-first. Revised: "How does it feel to be here?" Continues first-person immersion. Science note: "Your brain uses strong emotion to tag goals as worth pursuing." At this point, the user has spent 8-12 minutes describing their deepest goal. They are emotionally open.

Phase 3: Commitment + Transformation (Steps 8-9)

Goal: convert passive goal description into active commitment, then show what structured practice changes.

8
Commitment Signature New
"Let's make this real." Displays the user's goal in large text: "I commit to [their goal]." Below: a signature field where they draw their name with their finger. Science note: "Written commitments increase follow-through by 42% (Cialdini & Goldstein, 2004). This is the first step in rewiring your brain." CTA: "I commit." This creates a physical, tactile moment that elevates the goal from something they described to something they declared. Re-engagement hook: "You committed to [goal] 14 days ago. Here's how your practice is progressing."
9
Before/After Transformation New
"The Shift." Left column (muted/faded): "Without a structured practice" -- scattered goals with no system, generic affirmations, visualization without understanding why, motivation that fades, no accountability. Right column (elevated, teal accent): "With Manifest" -- AI meditations personalized to your goals, a protocol designed by neuroscience, breathwork that regulates your nervous system, journaling that tracks real progress, weekly actions that connect vision to life. This reframes the purchase from "pay for an app" to "choose transformation over staying stuck." Directly addresses pain points #1 (waiting), #3 (hollow affirmations), #4 (overcomplication).

Phase 4: Personalization (Steps 10-12)

Goal: finish collecting preferences, then deliver the peak emotional moment.

10
Guide Selection Keep
Horizontal carousel with voice previews. 8 coaches with distinct personalities. Moved after goal creation so the user understands why the guide matters (this person will narrate YOUR meditation). Background trigger: coach message + first meditation generation starts here.
11
About You Keep
Voice-first self-description. "Who are you, and what's going on in your life right now?" Fully optional, always skippable. Comes after goal creation so trust is established. Enriches coach messages and meditation scripts.
12
Practice Preferences Revised
Progressive disclosure: meditation time, reflection day, optional integrations (Apple Health, Reminders). Revised copy: "When do you usually have quiet time?" (warmer than "most likely to meditate"). Do NOT request notification permissions here. Defer to post-first-session (Tactic 4).

Phase 5: The Aha Moment (Step 13)

Goal: deliver the single most emotionally powerful moment in the onboarding. This is where the user thinks: "This app understands me."

13
Coach Message Player Keep
Full-screen "Voicemail" experience. The coach speaks directly to the user by name, references their specific goal and purpose, explains why the science works, and paints the week ahead. Word-by-word transcript scrolls in the lower third. Auto-plays with 1s fade-in. No skip for the first 10 seconds. This is the peak emotional moment and the ideal paywall lead-in. By this point the user has invested 15+ minutes, heard their goal reflected back to them in a personalized voice, and felt genuinely understood.

Phase 6: Conversion (Steps 14-16)

Goal: convert the emotional peak into a subscription. Three screens, each with one job.

14
Paywall Screen 1: The Offer Frame New
"Your science-backed practice is ready." Subtext: "Try everything free for 7 days." Reflects the user's goal back: "Your personalized plan for [their goal]." Three-item value summary with icons: AI meditations personalized weekly, breathwork + journaling protocol, weekly action plans with science notes. CTA: "See my free offer." One job: establish that there's a free trial and the plan was built for them. Delivers Outcome + Trust elements.
15
Paywall Screen 2: The Anxiety Remover New
"We'll remind you before your trial ends." Visual timeline: Today (full access) → Day 5 (reminder notification) → Day 7 (trial ends, cancel anytime). Subtext: "No surprise charges. Cancel in one tap." CTA: "Continue." One job: remove the #1 reason users reject free trials (fear of forgetting and getting charged). Blinkist saw +23% conversion and -55% complaints with this pattern. Builds trust, which is the core brand value.
16
Paywall Screen 3: The Close New
Plan options with annual highlighted as "Most Popular." Savings math: "That's $1.15/week." Animated CTA: "Start my free trial." Trust signals below: "Cancel anytime" + "Restore purchases." Social proof: "Based on research from 6 peer-reviewed texts." Secondary: "Continue with free plan" (soft paywall, clearly visible). If dismissed, triggers the 3-Day Challenge recovery (see below). Design: Animated elements (2.9x conversion lift per Adapty 2026). No toggle tricks (Apple Guideline 3.1.2). No countdown timers or guilt (brand-aligned).
+
Completion Revised
"Your practice begins now. Your first personalized meditation is being crafted right now. Check in tomorrow and [guide name] will be waiting." Creates anticipation for Day 1 return. Triggers notification permission request contextually (see Smart Notifications below).

Removed from Current Flow

×
Affirmations Step Removed
Was the only skippable step. AI generates affirmations from the goal anyway. Adds friction without value. Contextual prompts (post-meditation, in journal) convert better. Removal reduces flow by 1 step, offsetting 3 additions with a net +2.

Pricing Strategy

Based on Adapty 2026 benchmarks and competitive analysis. Weekly plans with free trial generate the highest 12-month LTV ($49.27). Annual plans are the best value anchor. Lifetime captures commitment-averse users.

PlanPriceTrialRationale
Weekly + Trial $4.99/week 3-day free Highest conversion rate. Creates urgency. Undercuts Stella's $7/week. Captures impulse.
Monthly $12.99/month None No-commitment option. Mid-tier anchor makes annual look better.
Annual (highlight) $59.99/year 7-day free Best value ($5/month). "Most Popular" badge. Primary revenue driver.
Lifetime $149.99 None One-time revenue. Captures users who hate subscriptions.
Paywall Copy Principle

Never use "Subscribe" as CTA text. Use benefit-driven language: "Start my free trial," "Start my practice," "Begin my journey." The button labels should describe what the user gets, not what they're paying.

Paywall Dismissal Recovery

The 3-Day Challenge

When a user dismisses paywall Screen 3, don't just let them go. Convert "no" into "not yet" with a structured, low-commitment challenge that builds habit and creates a second conversion opportunity.

Challenge Invitation Screen

"Start the 3-Day Science of Manifestation Challenge"

"Experience the core practice free. Complete all 3 days and unlock a special offer."

  • Day 1: Guided breathwork session (free tier)
  • Day 2: Journal prompt + science insight (free tier)
  • Day 3: AI meditation preview + special pricing offer

CTA: "I'm in." Each morning: push notification "Day [X] of your challenge is ready." After Day 3 completion: paywall with time-limited 30% discount on annual plan.

This works because it triggers commitment psychology (they said "I'm in"), builds habit through 3 days of engagement, and demonstrates the protocol through experience rather than description. The Day 3 paywall converts at significantly higher rates than the initial paywall because the user now has 3 days of evidence that the system works.

Metrics to Track

MetricTargetWhy It Matters
Challenge start rate>40%% of paywall dismissers who accept
Challenge completion rate>60%% who finish all 3 days
Day 3 paywall conversion>20%Should exceed initial paywall rate
7-day retention>50%Challenge participants vs non-participants

Smart Notification Timing

Current approach: notification permissions requested during onboarding completion. Problem: the user hasn't experienced the product's value at that point. Once iOS denies, you can't ask again.

New Approach

Defer to Post-First-Session

After the user completes their first meditation or breathwork session in the main app, show a contextual screen:

  • Headline: "Build your daily practice"
  • Subtext: "Users who set reminders practice 2x more consistently"
  • Three time options: Morning (9 AM), Afternoon (2:30 PM), Evening (9 PM)
  • User selects preferred time → triggers iOS notification permission prompt

The user has just completed a session. They feel good. They've experienced value. Choosing WHEN to be reminded reframes the prompt from "let this app interrupt you" to "help me build this habit." Opt-in rate increases significantly.

Rating Prompt Strategy

Apple's App Store algorithm weights fresh ratings heavily. The key: ask when emotional state is highest.

Trigger: After 2nd or 3rd Completed Meditation

  1. Meditation ends → "Session Complete" screen with calming animation
  2. Brief "processing your practice" screen showing session count + star rating
  3. After 2-3 seconds → trigger SKStoreReviewController.requestReview()
  4. Whether they rate or not → transition to session summary

Rules: Max 1 prompt per session. Never during a session. Apple limits to 3 per 365 days. Not on the very first session (still forming impression). Best on 2nd or 3rd when they have enough experience to rate confidently.

Fresh ratings feed the ASO flywheel: more ratings → better keyword rankings → more organic downloads → more ratings. I Am built a $7.2M/year business on this flywheel. Manifest can accelerate it by timing prompts to emotional peaks.

Four Elements Coverage Map

Every screen should deliver at least one element. All four must be hit before the paywall.

All four elements are covered multiple times before the paywall close. Trust is the most reinforced element, which aligns with Manifest's positioning as the science-grounded alternative.

Pain Point Integration

The top 10 manifestation pain points from our March 2026 research (26 X posts, 3 Reddit threads, 15 web sources) are addressed at specific moments in the onboarding:

Competitive Differentiation

How this onboarding flow compares to the 6 competitors analyzed in our competitive research:

vs Stella ($7.2M/yr)

Stella converts existing audience (4.5M followers) directly. No formal onboarding. Audio stories only. Manifest's 16-step flow creates deeper investment, personalization, and science credibility that Stella cannot match. Pricing undercuts Stella ($4.99/week vs $7/week).

vs I Am ($7.2M/yr)

I Am built revenue on ASO compounding over 10 years. One-dimensional product (affirmations only). Manifest's onboarding demonstrates a full protocol (breathwork + visualization + journaling + action) in a single flow. The before/after screen directly positions against I Am's limitations.

vs Calm / Headspace

Generic meditation libraries. Manifest's onboarding creates a personalized meditation from the user's own words during the flow. By the time they reach the paywall, they've heard their goal reflected back by name. No generic meditation app does this.

vs Manifestive

Claims neuroplasticity positioning but surface-level. Broadest feature set but less depth. Manifest's commitment signature + science citations during onboarding out-science Manifestive decisively. The credibility teaser + coach message create a trust gap competitors cannot close.

Background Generation Timing

The coach message and first meditation generate in the background while the user finishes the flow. Getting the timing right is critical so the coach message is ready when the user reaches Step 13.

Generation Trigger: After Guide Selection (Step 10)

At this point, we have: goal description, purpose, sensory detail, emotional feel, selected guide. Everything needed for both generations.

  • Coach message: ~15-20s generation time. User still has About You + Preferences before reaching the player. Ample buffer.
  • First meditation: ~45-70s generation. Continues in background through paywall and into the main app. Ready by the time they open Day 1.

If coach message isn't ready when the user reaches Step 13: show a breathing orb animation as loading state. Auto-advance when ready. This doubles as additional nervous system regulation.
